The Raddle Man

from Christmas in a Celtic land by Golden Bough

/

about

With the coming of winter the Raddle Man brings the red dye and for this, the farmers are grateful. The dye, or “raddle”, will be used to mark the sheep so that the animals may be found when the snow begins to fall. But even as the “fiddler” is revered, he is also feared, for he is the bringer of the magical mistletoe and those who hear his music are compelled to dance until dawn. Beware the young girl who receives a kiss from the Raddle Man, for she will be enchanted forever.
